Football fans often don’t travel on away days in Indonesia, partly thanks to the complex geography and partly due to restrictions and bans. However, for various reasons, playing away against Bali United FC is often a season highlight for many Indonesian fan groups.
On the 10th of April, Persija Jakarta and Johor Darul Ta’zim FC played against each other at the Stadion Utama Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta in the group stage of the AFC Cup. Besides promising an exciting clash on the field, the fixture represented more than just the meeting of two big Football clubs.

Persija fans, collectively known as Jakmania, are nuts. Word on the street is that their chosen orange, in spite of Persja’s traditional playing colours being red and white, dates from Dutch colonisation and presence in Batavia, the former name of the Indonesian capital.
Javanese Football fans have famously taken influence from the British fan scene of the 80s. That British style is reflected in this design, featuring a cross similar to the St George’s Cross seen on many English fan designs.
