A less than chivalrous design brought to you by somebody who is clearly a Denver Broncos fan (NFL in case you were wondering). We cannot say we are fans of the…. theme of this Aufkleber, but the colours contrast well in spite of its vulgarity. Moreover, it is interesting to observe fans of teams, clubs and franchises in other sports taking inspiration from Football fan groups and adapting their practices to their own needs. We at FBTG have previously made the point that far from seeing themselves as culturally superior (as many outsiders like to claim), US citizens who follow team sports often display an alacrity to “copy” (for lack of a better word) fan customs they observe in stadia around the world. NFL fans creating Football-Ultra style stickers and posting them around your city is perhaps a good example of this.
We have all seen the rather alarming news coming fresh outta the world’s most popular federation this week. While many are indeed shocked by the Capitol Hill…. episode, some of the footage and photographs taken during the event that have emerged in the digital sphere have proven far too fucking funny to avoid receiving the dubious accolade “meme-worthy”. In this spirit, we at FBTG wanted to jump on the bandwagon and take advantage of the internet’s favourite ginger thief to have a bit of topical Football-related fun.

To cynical and subtle Europeans, nothing is a bigger cringe than American Sports culture. Cheerleaders, half-time shows, a sponsor for absolutely everything. And rows upon rows of adults festooned with a garish and nauseating array of stars and stripes. Flags, face paint, costumes…. the whole culture is so far from European Football tradition, it is easy to convince yourselves that Americans would never be able to “do” Football fanatic properly.
But Andy Leary is prepared with apt retort. “That’s the response. Come to an event and tell me about that after”.
This is the National Team fan group you really should know about.

In their masterpiece ‘Soccernomics’, Simon Kuper and Stefan Szymanski try to predict which nation will be the future dominant Football nation. They rank countries based on population size, success, GDP per capita and working-class population size; the metrics they believe contribute toward international success in the sport. Football’s low barriers to entry have made it thrive in cities and countries with large working-class populations. All you need is a ball to play. Thus, in theory, countries with larger blue-collar populations will produce better Footballers and are more likely to be successful.
Their prediction? Turkey. But there is one factor they didn’t take into account. Continue reading
